Most tagines are decorated where you can see them — on the lid. Ours is painted on the base as well, by the same hand, in the same pattern.
It matters more than it sounds. A tagine goes to the table whole and gets opened in front of everyone. When the lid comes off a Supreme, the pattern is still there, framing the food for the rest of the meal.
Thrown and hand-painted by Tunisian artisans. Lead-free glaze, safe for the oven, the stovetop with a diffuser, and the dishwasher. The wide, shallow base forms a tight seal with the conical lid, so steam rises, condenses, and falls back over the food — slow-cooked, tender, and needing far less liquid than a pot.
No two are identical. Small variations in the painting are the mark of a hand, not a machine.
Classic or Supreme?
Same artisans. Same lead-free clay. Same hand-painted patterns. The difference is how far the pattern goes.
Classic — the lid is hand-painted. Lift it, and the base is bare terracotta.
Supreme — the lid and the base are hand-painted. Lift it, and the pattern is still there. Under the food, around the table, for the whole meal.
A tagine spends ten minutes in the oven and two hours on the table.
