The Kamsah Guide to Setting and Achieving Your New Year's Resolutions

At the end of December, we often think about what we’ve accomplished, our hopes for the years to come, and what we think the year ahead will bring. For most people, the end of the year brings reflections of years past and hopes for the future. Many of us make at least one New Year’s resolution by January 1st and then forget the resolution soon after. A study done by the University of Scranton found that while 45% of Americans make resolutions, it’s only a mere 8% who are able to achieve them. There are a strong and mighty few who are able to achieve those New Year’s resolutions with a few simple practices. We've put together a plan to help you become a part of the goal achieving 8% in 2017. These practices have been tried, tested, and proven to help people achieve their most ambitious goals. 


First, choose the right resolution. This requires a bit of insight and personal strategy but it will make your resolution more attainable. Give yourself a chance to fall in love with the process of maintaining your resolution. Do so by choosing a goal that you are both intrinsically motivated and extrinsically motivated to achieve. Intrinsic motivation is when you are motivated to do something because it brings feelings of enjoyment, engagement, and inner satisfaction. External motivation is when you are motivated by an outside reward like money, a prize, or public recognition. For example, if you want to lose weight and enjoy dancing, consider making a resolution to take ballroom lessons and enter a competition. If you enjoy jogging, consider making a goal to jog more and train for a 5K or a half marathon. This could help burn extra calories doing something you enjoy while getting you closer to the goal of weight loss.

Write down and visualize your resolutions. See it in order to achieve it. After choosing your New Year’s resolution, take a quiet moment to write it down. In addition to your end goal, write down the smaller steps needed and the benchmarks to achieving your goal. Next, take time every day to sit in a sacred space that it quiet and peaceful to visualize yourself taking the necessary actions and achieving this year’s New Year’s resolution. Visualization fires up the same neurons in the brain as actual participation. If you’ve made a resolution to live life to the fullest in 2017, take 10-15 minutes every day to visualize what that would look like. After your visualization session, go out and start taking action! Once you’ve set your resolution, it’s time to find your tribe- Studies have shown that having a support system for achieving goals can help boost goal achievement. Considering creating your own mastermind group where you meet with other goal getters to support, advice, and encourage each other. When organizing your group, consider inspirational meeting themes such as, an inspirational book, creating vision boards, or creating an action plan for your goals. After establishing a time to meet and encourage one another, start creating an inspirational space for meeting. During your inspiration sessions, make sure the ambiance reflects a spirit of goal achievement. Design the atmosphere to be both inspirational and engaging.
